Grading is the process of shaping and sloping the ground before pavement, stone, or a building pad is installed. Done right, it establishes the foundation and drainage every durable surface depends on. At Paved Assets, grading isn't an afterthought we rush through to get to the fun part — it's where the longevity of the entire project is decided. Get the grade right and the pavement above it performs for years. Get it wrong and no amount of quality asphalt will save it.
Why proper grading determines how long your pavement lasts
Water is the number one enemy of asphalt and aggregate alike. When a surface doesn't drain, water pools, seeps into the foundation, softens the sub-grade, and works its way back up through the pavement — oxidizing binders, washing out the base, and turning small cracks into potholes and alligatoring. Most pavement failures that look like an “asphalt problem” actually started as a grading and drainage problem.
That's why we shape every site to move water away from the surface and toward the drainage it was designed for. Establishing the correct slope, crown, and fall before anything is installed is the single most important thing we can do to protect your investment.
Our grading and sub-grade process
We start by clearing and stripping the area — removing vegetation, topsoil, old pavement, and any unsuitable material. From there we cut and fill to bring the site to the design elevations, then shape the surface to the precise slope and drainage pattern the project calls for.
Next comes the sub-grade, the compacted soil layer the whole structure sits on. We compact it thoroughly and proof-roll it to find soft or unstable spots before they become a problem. Where we find them, we undercut and stabilize — replacing or reinforcing weak material rather than burying it and hoping. A sub-grade that's evenly compacted and properly drained is what lets the stone base and pavement above perform as designed.
The right equipment for precise grades
Precision matters when you're working in fractions of a percent of slope. We use the right machine for each stage — graders and dozers for shaping, skid steers for tight and detail work, and laser- and GPS-guided grading where exact slope and drainage are critical. Rollers and compactors lock the sub-grade in place. The result is a site that drains the way it's supposed to, with no surprises once the stone and asphalt go down.
Built for North Carolina conditions
The Triangle's clay-heavy soils and heavy seasonal rain are unforgiving of shortcuts. Soils that hold water, expand, and contract demand careful sub-grade preparation and drainage that's planned for local conditions — not a generic template. As a local contractor, we understand the soil and climate we're working in, and we grade for the weather your property actually sees.
One contractor, from the ground up
Because we grade, install the stone base, and pave, you get one accountable team for the foundation and the finished surface — no finger-pointing between a grading sub and a paving crew when something doesn't line up. It's the most reliable way to make sure the work that gets buried is done as carefully as the work you can see.
