Aggregate Base Course (ABC) — often called crusher run or simply “ABC stone” — is the layer of crushed, compacted stone that sits between the sub-grade and the asphalt. It's the part of a pavement nobody sees and almost everyone underestimates. The stone base carries the traffic load, spreads it across the ground below, and keeps the pavement above it stable and dry. When a base is too thin, poorly compacted, or built on a weak sub-grade, the asphalt on top fails early — no matter how good the asphalt is.
At Paved Assets, we install and rebuild stone bases for three distinct situations: new construction, failed sub-bases on renovation jobs, and gravel roads and lots where stone is the finished surface.
ABC base for new construction
On new builds — new parking lots, access roads, drive lanes, and building pads — the stone base is installed after the site is graded and the sub-grade is compacted. We place ABC to the specified depth, build it up in controlled lifts, and compact each lift thoroughly so the finished base is dense, uniform, and at the correct grade. A base built to spec is what lets us hand off a smooth, level surface for paving and gives the finished asphalt its full design life.
Rebuilding failed sub-bases on renovation jobs
When an existing lot develops alligator cracking, recurring potholes, or areas that sink and hold water, the real problem is usually underneath — a failed base or sub-grade, not just the asphalt. Patching the surface over a bad base only buys a few months.
For these renovation jobs we perform full-depth repair: we remove the failed asphalt and excavate down to the problem, dig out unsuitable or saturated material, and install and compact fresh ABC to rebuild a sound base before the area is repaved. It costs more than a surface patch, but it fixes the cause instead of the symptom — and it's the difference between a repair that lasts and one you're calling us back about next year. We'll always tell you honestly when a base rebuild is warranted and when a lighter repair will do.
Gravel roads & parking lots
Not every surface needs asphalt. For access drives, laydown and storage yards, rural and industrial roads, and overflow or low-traffic parking, a well-built aggregate surface is a durable, cost-effective choice. We grade for drainage, install geotextile fabric where the sub-grade calls for it, and place and compact ABC or gravel to a stable, well-shaped surface that sheds water and holds up to traffic. Built correctly, a gravel road or lot is far more than “dumping stone” — it's a graded, compacted, drainable surface engineered to last.
Compaction and quality is everything
A stone base is only as good as its compaction. We place aggregate in proper lift thicknesses, manage moisture so the material compacts to density instead of just moving around, and proof-roll to confirm the base is solid before anything goes on top. Where the underlying sub-grade is weak, we reinforce with geotextile or geogrid so the base doesn't pump and rut under load — a detail that's especially important on the soft, clay-heavy soils common across the Triangle.
One contractor, from the ground up
Grading, base, and paving from a single team means the foundation is built to suit the surface that's going on it — and that the crew burying the stone is the same one standing behind the finished pavement. It's the most dependable way to protect what you're spending on the project.
